Bill (William) Sohor

Transplant Type: Kidney & Pancreas

It's been a long road for Bill. In 2006, he suffered through a near-fatal MRSA infection that destroyed his pancreas, damaged his leg and left him partially blind.  Despite all that, he managed to start a life in Manalapan, NJ with his loving wife Carolyn. After a decade of dealing with the complications of his type 1 diabetes and the heavy antibiotics taken to treat his MRSA, he was diagnosed with end-stage renal failure in 2016. In order to try for a kidney-pancreas dual transplant, Bill and Carolyn were forced to uproot their lives, leaving friends and family behind to move to Burlington NC in August 2016.

Bill's routine involves 3 days a week in a dialysis chair, nine different specialty physicians and more pills, tests, and Injections than most can imagine. Because of his blindness, he can no longer drive. If he wants to travel, he must plan it around the location of a dialysis center. To survive, he must be hooked up to a machine to clean his blood. he has severe dietary restrictions and must take 7 or more insulin injections per day.

A transplant would free Bill from a lifetime of dialysis treatments and constant worries about monitoring and maintaining blood sugar. He and Carolyn could get back to enjoying nature, taking walks with their beloved dog Reilly, and get back to growing the family that has been put on hold since Bill has become ill. So much has been taken away from him: to get some of it back would be nothing short of amazing.

The cost of this type of transplant is over $600,000. A majority of that will be covered by insurance, but Bill and his family have been told to expect out-of pocket costs approaching $75,000.  This includes copays, hospital time and anti-rejection medications, which can cost upwards of $5,000 per month.

You can help by making a tax-deductible donation to NFT in honor of Bill. Your contributions DIRECTLY help Bill and his family.
