Franklin Mena

Transplant Type:   Heart

Franklin is man with a new lease on life.  He aspires to experience new activities like taking a martial arts class, reading more books, learning data analytics, and runing a marathon.   These were activities that had not been possible for him to complete for nearly 20 years, until recently.

After over 2 decades of countless hospital visits, trouble breathing, pain, fatigue, excessive weight gain, and lethargy, Franklin has a new lease on the world because of his recently received heart transplant that has saved his life.  Franklin describes the immediate changes he already feels from his surgery that took place on 1/31/2024:

“What makes me happy are really the little things we take for granted. Before the operation I was not able to walk up a hill without wheezing or having to stop, I wasn't able to do anything. Now I can just breeze on through without any issue and it feels different and that makes me extremely happy. Right now, I'm thinking that I'm invincible with the new heart, but I know I have limits and I am now on the road to recovery. I'm eating better, I'm trying to walk 8,000 steps a day, I'm trying to regain the muscle mass I lost after the transplant. This is a whole new outlook for me, and I cannot waste it. I will take care of this heart for as long as I can.”

Franklin’s transplant journey is just beginning, and he needs your help.

The average heart transplant costs more than $1,000,000. Even with the support of health insurance, Franklin still faces significant medical expenses following his transplant. Post transplant there will continue to be pressing financial needs including lifetime follow-up care and costly medications. Franklin will also be facing a loss of income as he will be unable to work during recovery.
